Visitor Experience Facilitator
Full-Time (24-40 hrs variable based on Applicant) Tues-Sat
Hourly Rate $17 per hour
Overview: The Visitor Experience Facilitator (VEF) works to ensure that the cultural and environmental resources of the Conococheague Institute (a 30 acre Non Profit focused on Frontier History) are enjoyed not only today, but for generations to come.
This position will provide a work experience like no other.
The VEF will research and develop new exhibits using period artifacts and perform 18th century living history crafts and domestic programs in the cabins.
In order to tell a complete story of 18th century frontier existence, the applicant will become able to discuss the lives of all inhabitants of the Conococheague. This includes men, women, enslaved individuals, Native Americans, English, Scotch-Irish, and German residents.
In order to ensure the Visitor has a safe and enjoyable visit, the Visitor Services Facilitator other duties will involve standard cleaning and maintenance of the buildings, as well as behind the scene programming development and other duties as assigned.
The Visitor Services Facilitator will also provide critical leadership and direction for a close knit team of part time staff, volunteers, interns and students to better achieve CI’s mission.
Organizing interpretive supplies, maintaining volunteer databases, acting as a liaison between schools and program partners and attending outreach events are other parts of this important role.
Essential Job Responsibilities
The Position is a multifaceted role, and so the responsibilities can be broken down into parts:
Visitor Experience Facilitator - Team Leader
- Coordinate Interns and Volunteers associated with the programs, make assignment decisions, provide training and guidance and take corrective action as needed.
- Assist with curriculum development to help ensure the delivery of high-quality programming.
- Represent the program with community outlets to support program building and fundraising efforts.
- Organize work days and programs to provide to valuable learning experiences for the community
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with organizational partner resources, the program participants, and the schools.
- Act as a point of contact with program partners, schools, and program participants by being responsive to their needs and concerns.
- Work with the Executive Director and staff to address attendance, performance, or behavioral issues quickly.
Historical Interpretation - Gardening
- Apply organic pesticides and fertilizers.
- Maintain a garden through planting, watering, weeding, pruning, mulching, and other outdoor tasks as necessary.
- Research and create plans for historically appropriate crops.
- In conjunction with the Executive Director, develop and maintain a planting plan to balance considerations of historic interpretation, beauty, visitor experience, ease of maintenance, year-round interest, and food production.
- Work with other CI staff and volunteers to develop and run public programming, special tours, and workshops.
Historical Interpreter - Cabin/Tavern
- Cleaning and maintenance of the cabins and items inside to present a clean display to the public
- Present daily life interpretation to visitors
- Able or willing to learn historic skills such as cooking, carpentry, sewing etc
- Stay active in down time by practicing historical accurate crafts for CI’s use
Education and Program Development
- Work with the Director to develop, produce, and analyze exhibition-related programming, educational materials, and didactics
- Provide information and assistance to the Director to develop communications and marketing materials and strategies regarding exhibitions and programs
- Contribute to site publications and communication efforts as requested
- Provide information regarding exhibitions and programs for website and social media content
- Collaborate with the Director to prepare exhibition-related materials for public relations and marketing efforts
- Contribute to the development of communications and marketing strategies and materials to serve audiences and to enhance the museum’s image, identity, and donor prospects
- Research and develop virtual programming content
- Assist in curatorial duties in ensuring CI’s collections are well cared for
Site Safety and Presentation
- General inspection of CI buildings and grounds on a regular basis to identify needed repairs and general maintenance
- Routine cleaning of structures including bathrooms to ensure positive visitor experiences
- Identify dangerous hazards and report them to management
Visitor Services
- Greet guests to the site in a warm and engaging manner
- Accept payments for admissions and gift shop
- Answer phones, taking messages, passing on to Management
- Answer questions from museum guests
- General customer service
- Maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of the Visitor Center and bathrooms
- Preparing deposits
- Ensure a balanced cash drawer and change box
- Staying current of CI’s activities and inform guests of upcoming events and programs
Experience Requirements
- Excellent communication and customer service skills required.
- Previous experience working with children and/or in an education setting.
- Self driven and able to work alone without constant guidance
- Must pass a background check.
- Must be able to work outside in all weathers in historic clothes and be able to lift 40lbs
- Self-motivated and be able to work independently and organize tasks.
- Learn the history of the site.
- Be comfortable interacting with the public and giving tours/demonstrations.
- Ability to delegate tasks to a small team, provide follow up instructions and ensure timetables are met.
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills are strongly encouraged.
Supervision: The Visitor Experience Facilitator reports to the Executive Director but is expected to be aware of job objectives and responsibilities, be able to perform tasks without ongoing supervision and with the highest standards of integrity and work collaboratively with all Museum staff, partners and vendors.
